On 30 May 2025, as part of the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Conservation, an important working meeting was held between the Director General of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zhang Yuanming, and the Chairman of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Colonel General Rajabali Rahmonali.
During the meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in the field of monitoring, preventing and reducing the risk of natural disasters in the context of climate change and discussed the practical results of the implementation of a number of scientific and technical projects within the framework of bilateral cooperation.
In particular, Professor Zhang Yuanming spoke about joint projects to monitor deformation processes in the Sarez Lake area using the BeiDou satellite system and the use of digital technologies to monitor and predict avalanches on the country's main highways.
During the meeting, Professor Zhang Yuanming presented the Chairman of the Committee with an Atlas of Tajikistan's glaciers, prepared on the basis of high-precision satellite images, as well as a Map of the glaciers of the Republic of Tajikistan, which will serve as an important scientific and informational basis for further research.
By decision of the Committee, Professor Zhang Yuanming was awarded the honorary medal “For cooperation in the Feld of emergency situations and Civil Defense” for his significant contribution to the development of bilateral scientific and technical cooperation.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding and became a vivid example of the successful integration of science in ensuring environmental safety.
