From 10 to 24 October 2026, the International Training Program on Extreme Climate Events and Impacts along the Belt and Road was held in Xi’an, People’s Republic of China. The programme focused on extreme climate events, climate change and their environmental impacts, with the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS), serving as the main host institution.

Mekhrovar Okhonniyozov, an Environmental Specialist at the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA), Dushanbe, participated in the programme.

On 17 October 2026, he delivered a presentation at the Silk Road Early-Career Scientists Forum on Extreme Climate Events and Impacts entitled “Environmental Monitoring and Natural Hazards Assessment in the High Mountains of Tajikistan.”

The presentation highlighted key areas of environmental monitoring and natural-hazard assessment in Tajikistan’s mountainous regions. Particular attention was given to the use of satellite data, geographic information technologies and unmanned aerial vehicles to observe high-mountain landscapes, glaciers and related natural processes.

The presentation also addressed the monitoring of deformation processes in the Lake Sarez area, as well as the study of landslides, debris flows and other geological hazards. It emphasized the value of an integrated approach combining Earth observation, field surveys and instrumental measurements.

Participation in the programme provided an opportunity to exchange scientific experience, expand professional contacts and learn about approaches to studying climate change and natural processes. The knowledge and contacts gained may support further work in environmental monitoring, high-mountain ecosystem research and natural-hazard assessment in Tajikistan, while contributing to scientific cooperation between research institutions in Tajikistan and China.
