Brief information about the lake

On 18 February 1911, a powerful earthquake caused a massive rockslide (approximately 2.0–2.2 km³) from Mount Muzkul, which blocked the course of the Murghab River. This event created the Usoy Dam and Lake Sarez.

Research Objectives at Sarez Lake

  • Monitoring of deformation processes in the lake basin’s earth crust..
  • Study of water filtration processes through the Usoy Dam.
  • Analysis of the lake water balance.
  • Study of the hydrological and hydrochemical characteristics of the lake water.
  • Assessment of the impact of climate change on the lake water level.
  • Forecasting the risk of floods and natural hazards associated with ecological changes in the area.
